In September 2012, University Hospitals Authority & Trust opened the new Children’s Village. The 10,000-square-foot, rooftop garden sits between the Children’s Atrium and The Children’s Hospital at OU Medical Center. Inspired by illustrations found within children's books, designers have created in the Children's Village an environment where children’s imaginations can whisk them away from the realities of the hospital or doctor’s office. It features a stylized cityscape with shops and stands for pretend play, an open area with stage for small gatherings ideally suited for storytelling, playful seating, whimsical garden spaces and even a fantastical water feature.
In fall of 2012, the University Hospitals Authority and Trust opened the new rooftop garden at Children’s. Located atop the beautiful Samis Family Education Center, the rooftop garden provides a nature-filled outdoor environment, extending the facility’s ability to host a variety of events, day or night. The garden will include a 1,000 square foot canopy structure and sedum garden on the upper deck, while the lower deck will feature an elegant water feature surrounded by beautiful landscaping. In the garden, guests may soak in the views of downtown or simply enjoy the tranquility of the serene surroundings.
It’s a new gateway to health for Oklahoma children – one that will welcome hundreds of thousands of Oklahoma’s youngest patients and their families in the next year alone. More than 200 medical professionals and special guests, including young patients of OU Children’s Physicians and The Children’s Hospital at OU Medical Center, gathered to celebrate the completion of the new Children’s Atrium two weeks before it officially opened to the public.
The Atrium with its six-story, curving glass roofline is one of the most unique buildings in the entire state. Designed by Miles & Associates of Oklahoma City, its profile has been compared by some to water slides or ski slopes. On April 4, 2011, the Atrium became the new front door for both The Children’s Hospital at OU Medical Center and the OU Children’s Physicians Medical Office Building.
